Based in Calgary, the Quickdraw Animation Society (QAS) stands as one of the most valuable organisations in the indie Canadian animation community. Since 1980 this artist-run film co-op has proved to be a valuable hitching post for a supremely talented, fiercely independent and often courageously experimental posse of animators to learn, develop and refine their filmmaking free of any constraints. As a result of a forensic search of the vast QAS archive, we have brought together TWO very special programmes in tribute and celebration of QAS.
This extensive retrospective of some of the best films to come from within the QAS stable shows just how important it has been to nurture the true independent spirit of the Canadian animation scene. Fun, anarchic films happily rub shoulders with sublime abstract works. Hand-drawn cartoons share space with cameraless films. This is what grassroots, independent, auteur animation is all about.
This programme brings together the most important talons of QAS’s embrace of and commitment to the art, the appreciation and the makers of animation. The programme line-up first glimpses into the legendary workshops that QAS stages for first time, inexperienced ‘animators’. It then travels on to the workshops
Quickdraw Animation Society Logo, LIAF, London International Animation Festivaland co-operative/collective projects that have been made up of more experienced and established animators (often graduates of the former). And it finishes up with a sampling of the QAS alumni that have taken so much of what they harvested within the fertile plains of the QAS homeland and gone out into the wider world and continued on their own diverse paths.
