The Light & Shadow Salon
AN EVENING OF MOVING IMAGE AND IDEAS
presents
A WINTER HARVEST
“THAT SIMPLE LIGHT MAY RISE OUT OF COMPLICATED DARKNESS”
Doors open at 7:30pm, programme begins at 8pm sharp
(£5 entry on the door)
Dear Friends of the Salon,
it has been a long, cold, wet and dark winter, and the Salon has been enjoying the warmth and nourishment of the underground, the hidden, the sheltered and confined, replenishing our minds and resting our tired bones in the soil of dream and budding vision.
Now we are back with a programme of inspiring work for the year ahead, and what better way to begin than to invite you to a WINTER HARVEST, to celebrate all the acts of cultural resistance and entrepeneurship that inspire us, that challenge the changing landscapes around us and help shape and nurture the path ahead of us all!!
At a time of great hardship and storms- both literal and metaphorical- it is of great importance that we all take responsibility for the environment in which we live and grow.
If we are suffocating, we need to find the air to breath.
If we are in bounds, we ought to create a release.
If we are silenced, we must stand up and speak.
A change will arise from the smallest, most humble acts of singular vision.
Simple, concerted interventions will slowly but surely change the tides.
We will be looking at work by artists near and far:
Bread & Puppet Theatre
John Zorn
Nicholas McArthur
James Hesford
Tom Chick
Patti Smith
Bird Radio
Chiara Ambrosio
and many more (mostly living!) TBC
This is a night to celebrate the strength, perseverance, freedom and vision that keep our paths entwined.
As Peter Schumann of Bread and Puppet Theatre would say:”That simple light may rise out of complicated darkness!”
Tonight will also be an open platform, so if you have anything- work, thoughts, readings, images- that you would like to share, then we would be very happy to offer you space and time to do so!

The Light & Shadow Salon is a place for artists, writers and audience to meet and share ideas about the past, present and future of the moving image in all its forms.
The Salon is a place for exchange, interaction and cross-pollination and it welcomes active contributions and interventions from all its participants.
The Salon endeavours to support a structured and informed dialogue around film, the moving image and all that it involves: from magic to science, from sound to the eye, from ritualism to storytelling, from myth-making to hypnosis.
The Salon intends to act as a temporary and ephemeral container for all the work, ideas and people with an independent, radical and idiosyncratic nature, who renounce to find a home in existing movements/institutions but rather embrace the nomadic and transitory nature of art.
The Salon supports individual thought, inquisitive minds and a desire to further knowledge through dialogue and exchange.
‘So when you hear yourself invited to ‘see’, it is not the sight of this eye (of the flesh) that I would have you think about. You have another eye within, much clearer that that one, an eye that looks at the past, the present, and the future all at once, which sheds the light and keenness of its vision over all things, which penetrates things hidden and searches into complexities, needing no other light by which to see all this, but seeing by the light that it possesses itself.’ (Hugh of St Victor)
