The American dream of the Mad Men-era may well have been a white-collar career in the city and a white-picket-fenced home in the suburbs but this searing melodrama strips bare the myth of middle-class contentment to reveal the dysfunctional truth.

For his first major feature, Joe Sarno researched a real-life, wife-swapping club - where members wore gowns and masks to preserve their anonymity - bringing to this potentially torrid tale an almost sociological sense of sterile existence in a drab, dormitory town, where husbands vanish on the 7:21 morning train only to return, exhausted, in the evening.

For many years Joe Sarno (1921-2010) languished in genre obscurity but today he is recognised as a distinctive voice in American independent cinema. For much of his long and prolific career he collaborated with his wife, Peggy, and the couple are the subject of an illuminating documentary, The Sarnos - A Life In Dirty Movies, showing in London Film Festival on 11th and 16th October 2013.

Working in sexploitation cinema, Joe was free to investigate themes that fascinated him in a way that would never have been possible within the mainstream movie industry, returning time and time again to explore how psychology, economics and society interact to influence sexual relationships.

He is also notable for his emphasis on female desire and pleasure.
