A group of artists have come together to present different perspectives on audiovisual performances:
Traces in/of/with Sound is a performance series which explores the juxtaposition of two seemingly unrelated elements: live improvised voice and drawings. As an immersive experience it considers a contrapuntal relationship between sound and vision, and an experience of space through movement.
Melancholy Machines is a live improvised dialogue between electronic sound and voice and the projected image. Based on a loose principal narrative 'Melancholy Machines' develops a non linear form from the live and improvised interaction between the Sound Artist and the Filmmaker/Visual Artist. The combination of sonic textures and poetic imagery unfolds new arrangements, suggesting references to mythologies, nature, (post-) digital age and desire.
Banquet mixes sound and visual material collected by the artists together with appropriated footage from advertising, to create a poetic investigation of food and its manifold cultural relevances. More than anything, perhaps, food marks a continuous cycle of becoming and annihilation. Food disintegrates over time whether used or not, and within our bodies it also undergoes a process of decomposition, with its own waste products. Being perishable by nature, food requires continuous supply, failure of which would lead to catastrophic consequences. As a product of the earth, food connects us to our origins within nature.
Iris Garrelfs is an artist moulding complex sonic or multi-sensorial collages from found sounds or voices pulverised “into granules of electroacoustic babble and glitch, generating animated dialogues between innate human expressiveness and the overt artifice of digital processing” as the Wire Magzine put it.
Her work has been compared to artists such as Yoko Ono, Henri Chopin, Joan La Barbara, Meredith Monk and Arvo Part and has featured in exhibitions, festivals and as part of residencies internationally, including Hack the Barbican (2013), Liverpool Biennial (2012), International Computer Music Conference (NY 2010), GSK Contemporary at the Royal Academy Of Arts (2008/09), Gaudeamus Live Electronics Festival, (Amsterdam 2007), and Visiones Sonoras (Mexico 2006). She is currently an AHRC PhD research fellow at LCC in London where she also teaches on the BA Sonic Art. www.irisgarrelfs.com
Maike Zimmermann lives in London and Berlin and works image-based (photo, video, 16mm, super8) creating experimental films, video installations, photographic or site specific work. Her work has been shown internationally including exhibitions in Barcelona, Berlin, London, Monaco, San Francisco, St.Petersburg and Stockholm. She has been contributing images and videos to publications and channels such as Creative Review, the guardian/observer, Vogue online, DAZEDdigital, frieze magazine, Islamic Art Magazine, BBC, ITV, ARTE (Tracks) and many more.
In 2011/2012 she has been artist in residence at no.w.here in London and has been employed at the Victoria & Albert Museum as a video content producer, video editor and photographer. Jason Singh is a Beatboxer, Vocal Sculptor and Sound Artist whose work is rooted in inspiring people to engage in exciting creative experiences through the breath, technology, performance and participation. Using his breath, voice and a range of samplers and loop pedals, he can vocally recreate sound and music compositions mimicking a wide range of instruments, genres, atmospheres, wildlife, and abstract experimental sonic textures. Jason composes music for film, theatre, dance and facilitates sound and music workshops for both young people and adults. These include Beatboxing, Sound Design and Music Production. He is an Associate Lecturer at the Manchester Metropolitan University and has also recently completed a six month sound art residency at the V&A Museum. www.thesinghthing.com
Blanca Regina Pérez-Bustamante (Spain) is an educator, artist and curator. Her research interests are intermedia arts, real-time performance, “Expanded” and “Live” cinema, audiovisual and theatre studies, digital humanities, education and improvisation among others. She is an active member of London Music Hackspace and president of the Spanish artists association Mademotion. www.whiteemotion.com
Matthias Kispert is an electronic music composer and artist living in London. His broad range of interests include audiovisual live performance, composition with found sound, documentary as artistic medium, as well as the relations between artistic practice and wider cultural and social issues. As audio director of media artist collective D-Fuse, he is responsible for the sound aspect and also the conceptual development of much of the group’s work, including videos, installations and live cinema performances. www.matthiaskispert.com
