To celebrate the publication of Granta 129: Fate, contributors Mark Gevisser and Andrea Stuart discuss their work in the issue, with Granta’s publisher and editor Sigrid Rausing.

Gevisser came out as gay in the early 1980s, a direct beneficiary of American-style identity politics. In his remarkable essay ‘Self-Made Man’ he explores the boundaries between his generation’s self-discovery and the transgender children participating in today’s genderqueer movement. He finds a rich, supportive community in a most unexpected place – Middle America. Gevisser weaves together the personal, political and societal issues of transgender identity, pinpointing complex and important questions that will challenge our understanding of gender.

In a bold, autobiographical essay, Andrea Stuart reflects on lesbian culture in 1990s London, her own sexual identity and the experiences that catalysed a non-conformist lifestyle. A glimpse into the exclusive parties, the dress codes, the social expectations, the taboos and the sense of belonging that comes, paradoxically, from living on the fringe.
