The special curtain raiser at this screening is DUDLEY SUTTON

A social-cinema-art-docu feature film, The Film That Buys The Cinema was born out of a very pressing concern: to secure the future of an 108 seat, completely independent Microplex Cinema in Bristol, England. This part of its mission was achieved, now it has a life of its own as a fully-fledged film being screened across the globe. The FTBTC is a 70-minute film comprised of uncut one-minute takes, each one shot by a bewildering list of contributors, each whom have a wildly different relationship with this unique art-bunker. It's a viewing experience unlike most and most suitable at the Horse Hospital, a space that has long been an inspiration on the Cube.

Espousing charm and all kinds of creative thinking this 70 minute film piece veers from the intimate and poetic to the political and obscene. Containing specailly created minute long filmic segments from a cast of famous and obscure filmmakers, musicians, autodidacts, wrestlers, actors and activist groups, it's a delightful and delirious montage touching on our desire to retain independence and to collaborate, sometimes all at the same time.

In many ways it acts as a abstract documentary on cinema, art and society. Each minute has been sequenced together into a labyrinthine journey of light and sound to make a very here and now artistic time capsule, as it reaches around the globe to gather it's content and an extraordinary rendition of what makes spaces like The Cube work. Its a solo/outsider/group/gang thing.

The film gloriously links new and established film-makers and musicians with leading and trailing edge artists, ex-Cube volunteers, obscure pioneers of sound and vision as well as contributors pulled in from the wildly divergent spheres. Each contributor’s take is 60 seconds long with no credits so when it comes to intellectual juxtapositions, epic swipes and crazed comedic jump cuts this unique film promises the lot.

SPECIAL GUEST: Dudley Sutton

Introducing the night and starring in the film we are pleased to have iconic TV and film actor, loveable rogue and now a one man stand up entertainer. Dudley Sutton. His outragous one man show is a delight, full of charm, wit and drugs escapades he takes you back to encounter tales of the unexpected from his thesping around such great and varied work such as the infamous ‘The Leather Boys’, the radical 60’s ‘Theatre Workshop’, Eastenders, Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’, cult TV hit ‘Lovejoy’ and the wonderful ‘This Filthy Earth’.

Film on at 9pm

What the London Film Festival said about the film on it's world premiere.

"An insistent stream of lurid, poetic and bizarre otherworldly episodes are brought into compelling hard collision here, like an old underground VHS mixtape or an exceedingly choice – and unpredictable –weave of unlikely YouTube hits. This beguiling film was made to raise funds for the Cube, a boldly independent micro-cinema in Bristol trying to buy its own freehold. Each minute was newly shot by one of its different allies or former special guests - the luminaries include: Ben Rivers, Jem Cohen, Emma Hedditch, Nicolas Roeg, Peter Strickland and Jennet Thomas plus cult musician Jandek. An entertaining and powerful manifestation of the world of the Cube and its outreach, this epic movie also provides a striking measure of how much rich, diverse creative talent there is around right now."-William Fowler

Background: The Cube Cinema has been playing with film, culture and form for 15 years. Back in 1998 the Cube was set up with the crazy (but catchy and invigorating) notion that it would earn enough ticket money so that the film makers, who ran the place, could invest it in their own films. This never quite happened but they did, eventually, make this feature.

In April 2014, after a crazy and unforgettable flurry of activity, The Cube Cinema landed the building and now owns it, after meeting the £185,000 asking price with hundreds of people donating money and buying FTBTC packages, organising raffles and coming to special fundraising events.

All continuing sales of FTBC packages will go to cover pressing structural work on the building, to ensure and enrich its future.

All money from FTBTC goes direct to Microplex Holdings Bristol Ltd, a non-profit Industrial and Provident Society (registered number 31262R) with charitable status. Its aim is to transform the building into a safe, warm, functioning social art space in perpetuity.
