LIAF 2024: Best of the Next 2 (15+)

Lights, Camera, Animation! This is LIAF’s annual showcase of the most dazzling animated student films selected from the best animation and film schools from all around the world. This is  the first step on the animation ladder for these talented filmmakers, and the first time their wild and wonderful imaginations have been unleashed. Stop-motion, drawn animation, collage, cut-out, CGI, clay, ink and almost every other technique these animators can dream up are all on display here.  33 wondrous films in 3 hour-long programmes from the future stars of our animation universe.

Several of the filmmakers will be in attendance. Come along and help us celebrate this incredible work and to gain insights into their creative processes, inspirations, and the challenges they faced while bringing their visions to life.

 I Would Eat if I Could - Marci bursts into his former residence, into the peaceful rural environment, on a crowded subway train. His friends welcome him and they go to their favourite place. Perfect City: The Bravest Kid - Chased by his nightmare knife hand, the paper boy has to confront his real fear which is supposed to be his hope. [USA, China 2023 Dir: Shengwei Zhou 6’20]

Between You and Me - An animated journey through a young woman's diary entries, notes and drawings. [Canada 2023 Dir: Cameron Kletke 3’50]

Adult Teeth - The underlying pain of losing the ability to see yourself as a child - a very physical example of this connection being your baby teeth. [UK 2024 Dir: Effie Peters 6’10]

Fire - Time stands still one fine summer afternoon. An empty house, a dish still on the stove, an abandoned meal. The wind picks up and nature roars as a fire approaches, and everything will be changed forever.  I Wanna be a Statue - Despite their disinterest, a young child tries to convince her local community she wants to become a statue, bringing her on a surreal voyage towards the garish monolith that lingers in the background. [UK 2023 Dir: Harvey Auerbach-Dunn 3’15]

Anomaly - A news crew investigates a mysterious anomaly reported by residents of a small Latvian village, but the more questions are asked, the less clear it all gets. [Latvia, UK 2024 Dir: Arturs Voblikovs 5’50]

There are People in the Forest - Polish-Belarusian border from a bird’s eye view. Refugees, who are trying to cross it to get to Poland, are hiding in the forest. As if in a computer game, they need to go back to square one when they encounter an evil character or the game is over. [Poland 2023 Dir: Szymon Ruczynski 9’50]

 Yoga Warming -Gaia is living in a reality where the end of the world is close. During her yoga practice, she is struggling to control the impossible. [Israel 2023 Dir: Naama Yiron 4’50]
