LIAF 2024: Best of the Next 3 (15+)

Lights, Camera, Animation! This is LIAF’s annual showcase of the most dazzling animated student films selected from the best animation and film schools from all around the world. This is  the first step on the animation ladder for these talented filmmakers, and the first time their wild and wonderful imaginations have been unleashed. Stop-motion, drawn animation, collage, cut-out, CGI, clay, ink and almost every other technique these animators can dream up are all on display here.  33 wondrous films in 3 hour-long programmes from the future stars of our animation universe.

Several of the filmmakers will be in attendance. Come along and help us celebrate this incredible work and to gain insights into their creative processes, inspirations, and the challenges they faced while bringing their visions to life.

War Theater - During a theatrical performance featuring puppets glorifying war, a wounded soldier is taken backstage where he unveils the truth about war. Crevette - After stepping sock first into a puddle under her fridge, Jeanie realises that her freezer is completely frozen over. While hacking at the ice, she discovers a single shrimp that transforms into an embryo.  You Don't See Me - Eve, an old performer, muses on ageing and the formation of identity as she applies her makeup in a backstage dressing room. [UK 2024 Dir: Katie Saunders 2’15 University of the Arts, London]

Cocoon - A girl wakes up alone in the dark and surreal night, triggering fragmented memories of neglect by her care-givers. [China, UK 2024 Dir: Yiwei Chen 4’30, Royal College of Art, London]

Sheep Story - A person finds a home within a sheep's body. The person cuts into the sheep from the inside, feeding off its body while disregarding the sheep's desperate screams.  I Killed a Worm - Haunted by a childhood memory, a girl scales a mountain of her regrets to learn how to exist and live with her inner guilt. [UK 2024 Dir: Despina Markaki, Patricia Seriniyom 4’20 - University of the Arts, London]

Strokes - The story of a father and son through painting and what they might paint based on their broken relationship. [UK 2023 Dir: David Colin, William Crump 4’10, Royal College of Art, London]

Long Distance - A young woman living in a bustling metropolis has recently started a long-distance relationship. She feels lost and alone in her new situation, her emotions swinging between melancholy, frustration, hope and excitement. Searching for the Fifth Direction - The quest for self and its memories takes us through dark, forgotten inner spaces.
