Doors Open 7 pm
With screening, readings and music.
Book Works and Bridget Penney present an evening of screenings, readings and music to launch Licorice, her new novel, and the Interstices series.
Chalk, gorse, old coppice, redundant dew ponds, a crossroads formed by the intersection of an A road and an ancient fisherman’s track. A grisly story of infanticide, cannibalism and rough justice remembered on the map: local kids have dared and scared each other to run round ‘the witch’s grave’ since way back when. It’s August. The rain shows no sign of stopping. Licorice, a reclusive middle-aged filmmaker, has only a brief window of opportunity to realise her long-cherished film project about the story of Nan Kemp.
Playing with well-worn horror tropes as events on the shoot spiral out of control, and the sense of unease grows, Licorice is an original and contemporary work exploring folk horrors both ancient and modern,.
Bridget will be reading from Licorice, and we will be screening a short adaptation of an M R James short story and a profoundly creepy public information film. Music and more guests TBA
