About CJ + the release:
CJ Calderwood (b.1992 they/them) is a multi disciplinary artist working across music, and visual mediums. Alongside their solo music as ‘CJ Calderwood’ they are also a member of the band Good Sad Happy Bad as well as the electronic duo Lol K whose recent album Climbing/Holding/Falling was released July 2024 via label Halcyon Veil.
Umbra Lumen Tonos (2024, Glint) is the first full release for CJ Calderwood as a solo artist. It delves into their explorations of texture, tone and destruction and shines a spot light on the raw edges of the 7 tracks. The title refers to a renaissance drawing method for rendering shadow (umbra), light (Lumen), and ‘Tonos’ which is a darker line between light and shade which doesn’t exist in nature but helps to articulate a drawing. The record was largely arranged over the period of a year whilst CJ was receiving medical treatment for a tumour which is reflected in the challenging music presented. Filled with moments of uncompromising atonality punctuated by windows of delicate, heartfelt melody bandaged in sellotape yet staying the course.
