John Balance is best known as one half of industrial innovators Coil which he formed together with with Throbbing Gristle co-founder Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson. The output of Coil ranges from the avant-garde (including soundtracks for experimental filmmaker Derek Jarman), to acerbic reflections of passing trends in popular music, to experimental neoclassical and folk, to extended excursions into pure electronica. Many bands and composers have cited Coil as an influence. Balance was also a memeber of 23 Skidoo, Psychic TV, Zos Kia, and Current 93 and frequently collaborated with others such as Nurse with Wound, Death in June and Chris & Cosey.

John Balance is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the industrial, experimental minimalist and neofolk music scenes.
